A 24-hour strike, called for this Monday by the Verdi union, will affect more than 500,000 passengers and result in the cancellation of over 3,400 flights at major airports in Germany. This union action represents a significant escalation following several protests carried out in February.
Massive Impact on Air Traffic
The German Airports Association (ADV) has described the situation as a “nightmare scenario for passengers,” warning that the country’s air traffic will be practically paralyzed. Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s main air hub, announced that it is highly likely there will be no departures during the strike day. In this context, it urged passengers not to go to the facilities and to check the status of their flights on the airlines’ platforms.
Other affected airports include Munich, Stuttgart, Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Hanover, Bremen, Hamburg, Berlin, and Leipzig-Halle. However, the German air traffic control operator, DFS, has confirmed that its operations will not be directly affected.

Verdi Union’s Demands
The Verdi union has called for this strike in the public sector and among ground staff following the failure of the second round of collective negotiations last month. Their main demands include:
- An 8% salary increase or a minimum monthly raise of 350 euros (approximately 380 dollars).
- Additional bonuses.
- More days off.
For their part, employers have rejected these demands, arguing that they are financially unsustainable. Despite the impact of the strike, negotiations will continue this month, with the expectation of reaching an agreement that will prevent future disruptions in air transport.
Advice for Affected Passengers
Given this situation, travelers are advised to:
- Check the status of their flight on their airline’s website.
- Avoid traveling to affected airports if their flight has been canceled or rescheduled.
- Explore alternative transportation options, such as trains or buses, in case of urgency.
- Stay in contact with their airline to learn about possible compensations or itinerary changes.
