Wizz Air UK Delays Entry into Service of Airbus A321XLR Again

Wizz Air UK has postponed the entry into service of the Airbus A321XLR for the second time, as confirmed by the airline to the specialized outlet ch-aviation. The delay is due to an “unforeseen issue during the delivery process,” though the company has not disclosed specific details or provided a new estimated date for its arrival.

A Debut Postponed Twice

Initially, the airline had scheduled the A321XLR’s first commercial flight for March 31 on the London Gatwick–Jeddah route. This date was later adjusted to April 10. However, the latest delay leaves the operational start date of this model—a key component of Wizz’s expansion strategy—uncertain.

Expansion Continues, but with Operational Constraints

Despite the A321XLR delivery delay, the company has not halted its growth plans. Wizz Air recently launched operations between London and Riyadh using A321-200 aircraft. However, the reduced range of this model compared to the A321XLR forced the airline to limit passenger capacity. This measure aims to reduce the aircraft’s total weight, ensuring non-stop flights between the two airports without the need for refueling.

The A321XLR: A Cornerstone of Wizz Air’s Future

The first A321XLR destined for Wizz Air UK will bear the registration G-XLRA (msn 11631) and will be the first of its type to join the group’s fleet. Wizz Air Holdings has a total of 47 Airbus A321XLRs on order, distributed among its four air operator certificates (AOCs): Wizz Air, Wizz Air Malta, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, and Wizz Air UK. This model will enable the company to expand its long-haul network with low operating costs, a critical factor in the low-cost airline segment.
