Copa Airlines announced its growth and investment plans for 2025 this Thursday, focusing on expanding its route network, strengthening its fleet, and reinforcing its role as an economic driver for Panama. With an estimated annual investment of $1.7 billion, the airline aims to solidify the Hub of the Americas at Tocumen International Airport as the premier air connectivity center in the Americas.

88 Destinations, 32 Countries

By September 2025, Copa Airlines will connect Panama to 88 destinations in 32 countries through more than 375 daily flights. The network expansion will include new destinations such as San Diego, California, and two key Argentine cities: Tucumán and Salta. These additions bring the total number of destinations in Argentina to six, bolstering the airline’s presence in the southern part of the continent.

The expansion strategy is closely tied to the Panama Stopover program, a collaboration with the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP) and PROMTUR Panama. Thanks to this initiative, over 160,000 tourists transited through Panama in 2024, marking a 25% increase from the previous year. For 2025, the goal is to surpass 185,000 visitors.

Growing Fleet: 114 Aircraft by the End of 2025

The increase in routes and frequencies is supported by the expansion of its Boeing 737 MAX fleet. Copa Airlines ended 2024 with 102 aircraft and projects a total of 114 by 2025. The airline currently has an order for 57 MAX aircraft, which will be delivered over the next five years.

More Passengers, Greater Economic Impact

Copa Airlines expects to carry over 18.5 million passengers in 2025, an 8% increase compared to the 17.5 million transported in 2024. This rise in passenger traffic also translates into a direct boost to Panama’s economy.

During 2024, Copa’s operations generated approximately $1.6 billion in economic contributions (tax, payroll, supplier and other payments). By 2025, this contribution is expected to increase to $1.8 billion.

Job Creation and Professional Training

The expansion is not only measured in flights but also in employment. The airline ended 2024 with nearly 7,500 employees in Panama and over 8,000 across the Americas. For 2025, the company plans to create more than 500 new positions, reaching a total of 8,041 employees in Panama.

Additionally, over 1,500 new hires are expected, including pilots, mechanics, cabin crew, and administrative and operational staff.

The airline also promotes free training programs through its academies:

  • ALAS (Latin American Academy of Higher Aviation): Has graduated 250 pilots and can accommodate up to 100 students per year.
  • ATA (Aeronautical Technicians Academy): Trained 176 technicians and currently has 143 active students. In 2025, it launched a new technical program in partnership with the Don Bosco Technical Institute, with capacity for 50 students.
  • Cabin Crew Academy: Aims to graduate 400 professionals in 2025.

Integration with the Local Economy

As part of its commitment to economic development, Copa continues to incorporate products from Panamanian small and medium-sized enterprises into its onboard services, extending the economic reach of its operations beyond aviation.

With these steady steps toward growth, Copa Airlines reaffirms its role as a key player in Panama’s economic, tourism, and labor transformation. In the words of its CEO, Pedro Heilbron: “A better-connected country creates more opportunities for its people.”
